In August 2000, the Millennium World Peace Summit of Spiritual & Religious Leaders was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York with Secretary General Kofi Annan in attendance. This was the first time that the spiritual and religious leaders from all around the world gathered to sign a declaration, stated their intention and cooperation to create peace in this Millennium. The spiritual and religious leaders also hoped that this gathering would be symbolic and successful in reducing conflicts around the world. One of the many outcomes of this gathering of religious leaders, was the formation of the International Advisory Council of Religious and Spiritual Leaders to be in charge of a central organization to provide information and co-ordination for future peacekeeping activities.

Another important outcome resulting from the Millennium World Peace Summit of Spiritual and Religious Leaders was the gathering of women spiritual leaders, women political leaders and prominent businesswomen who founded The Global Peace Initiative of Women (GPIW). The organization was launched at the Palais des Nations in 2002 in Geneva, Switzerland. This is an international, multi-faith network of women leaders who come together to stimulate peace building and reconciliation efforts in areas of conflict and post-conflict. The organization's work aims to foster respect for all peoples on Earth and for the Earth's natural environment.
The organization realizes the importance of transmitting such values to the next generation, thus, it places special emphasis on cultivating interfaith understanding and developing leadership in young adults around the world. The GPIW Board of Directors consists of the following
